ABSTRACT

Introduction Dental and maxillary abnormalities encompass developmental and positional irregularities affecting both teeth and maxillary bones in individuals of various ages, including children and adults. This research study focuses on the management of sagittal misalignments linked to transverse misalignments in adult patients. Mandibular prognathism, a specific dento-maxillary irregularity, is characterized by the mandible having an anterior relationship with the base of the craniofacial skeleton. This facial disharmony has been frequently associated with mandibular laterognathism. Aim of the study The aim of this study is to evaluate and treat mandibular prognathism associated with mandibular laterognathism using virtual planning technology for interdisciplinary approach. Material and methods In this study was included a female patient, aged 35, sought medical attention due to concerns about facial aesthetics, specifically facial irregularities resulting in facial asymmetry. The patient initially noticed this facial asymmetry around the age of 14, and it has gradually worsened over the subsequent years. The study was based on clinical and paraclinical examination data, methods of diagnosis and orthodontic treatment of mandibular laterognathism, treated in the orthodontic department and in the dental clinic S.C ” Orto-Dental”. Results We successfully restored the interocclusal relationships that are typically seen in orthognathic occlusion. Through a posttreatment photographic analysis, we observed the reestablishment of facial symmetry, with facial levels becoming proportional as the expression of the nasolabial and chin folds normalized. Additionally, we achieved neutral canine and molar ratios consistent with a Class I Angle classification. We also obtained a physiological overjet and overbite. The midlines of the upper and lower teeth were aligned with the facial midline. Cephalometric measurements showed improvement in various parameters.

Key words: mandibular prognathism, hemimandibular hyperplasia, interdisciplinary approach, dentomaxillary anomaly.
